Short Biography

Alan Lester

Life Experience

  • I completed military training and worked as an operational medic in South Africa and Namibia.

  • I worked as a paramedic in Johannesburg

  • I have been the manager of a Christian rehabilitation centre for seven-and-a-half years

  • I have been involved in pastoral work, preaching, teaching, and caring for souls since 1998 in different churches and am currently the counselling pastor at Living Hope Church in Pretoria, an elder and founding member (livinghopechurch.co.za).

  • I teach through systematic theology every year at the African Bible Training Centre.

  • I have been practising and committed to Biblical Counselling since 2000

  • I have been playing the guitar and leading worship since the early 80’s

  • I have had experience in street evangelism, prison ministry, and as a travelling Christian musician and preacher

  • I have written two books. The first is Unending Hope for the Exhausted Addict, which is a direct evangelistic address to the addict who will pick it up and read. The second is Hurting in Hope, which describes my experience of the death of my wife in 2012. Both books are available for free download on my website graceunlimited.co.za.

Studies

  • I have spent, so far, thirteen years in theological study, both privately and through the following institutions:

    • Life Enrichment Ministries (Johannesburg, South Africa). One year program in systematic theology with a focus on Biblical Counselling.

    • The Bible Institute of Kalk Bay (Kalk Bay, South Africa). Diploma in Christian Ministries.

    • Christ Seminary (Polokwane, South Africa). Basic and Advanced courses in Biblical Counselling.

    • Grace School of Ministry (Pretoria, South Africa). Master’s level course in Biblical Counselling. Notably, this course was taught by Dr Wayne Mack, a first generation world-leader in the field.

    • South African Theological Seminary (Johannesburg, South Africa). Bachelor’s degree in theology.

  • I successfully completed both the academic and supervision phases of ACBC (Association of Certified Biblical Counselors) and maintain my certification annually.

  • Since 2009, I have been involved in student evaluation in the training of Biblical Counsellors in South Africa, working under Dr Wayne Mack in association with the ACBC-accredited biblical counselling training centre, SMTI (Strengthening Ministries Training Institute) of which Sybrand de Swardt is currently director.

Family

  • I was happily married to Charleen for 19 years before she died suddenly on 17 October 2012 (the subject of my second book), and from this marriage, I now have two deeply loved adult daughters.
